First-Year Latin
10 units MWF, 8:30-12:00 S. Herbold $490
This intensive, six-week course will cover the fundamentals of Latin grammar and introduce students to Roman culture. By the end of the course, students will be able to read and write in Latin. Mastery of Latin will improve students' command of English grammar and vocabulary as well as strengthen memorization and analytical skills. Through slide shows and readings in English we will also familiarize ourselves with Roman art, architecture, politics, religion, and mythology. Students should be prepared to work hard and memorize many grammatical forms. This course covers a year of high school Latin.

Second-Year Latin
10 units MWF, 8:30-12:00 A. Gabelko $490
Second-Year Latin continues the thorough grammar presentation which formed the basis of First-Year Latin. The first half of the course is devoted to reinforcement and review, and stresses participles, gerunds and forms and uses of the subjunctive. By the end of Lesson 20 students are prepared to read the section on CaesarŐs Gallic War. The second half of the course focuses on an anthology of a variety of Latin readings.
Prerequisite: Satisfactory completion of First-Year Latin or permission of the instructor.

First-Year Japanese
10 units MWF, 8:30-12:00 Y. Clark $490
The Japanese language is probably unlike other foreign languages that most students have studied before. Its grammar is quite different from English grammar, but is not really difficult to understand once students perceive the logic behind it. Japanese language study will broaden students' ideas about what a sentence is and how it is constructed. The course will include grammar and practical vocabulary building. By the end of the six weeks, students will be able to hold a simple conversation in Japanese. They will also be able to read and write hiragana and katakana syllabaries, as well as some kanji characters. Through the study of the Japanese language, students will also learn about Japanese culture, which is very different from American culture. This course is equivalent to one year of high school Japanese.

Second- and Third-Year Japanese
10 units MWF, 1:00-4:30 Y. Clark $490
(These courses cover the full content of Second- and Third- Year high school Japanese.) Using a multi-modal approach, Second-Year Japanese will include a comprehensive review of katakana and kanji followed by the the introduction of additional kanji. Emphasis will be placed on consolidation of listening and speaking skills, and expansion of grammar and constructions. Third-Year Japanese will provide further study of sentence patterns in polite, plain, and honorific Japanese speech. We will also learn about culture and customs in contemporary Japanese life.
