In addition to the complete first-year Latin curriculum, students also focus on: acquiring an understanding for Latin and for how language works; learning grammar and basic linguistic concepts through the medium of a foreign language; becoming aware of the process that is language; working to develop strong language study habits--such as how to go about learning a language and acquiring vocabulary, on generalizing what has been learned and applying that knowledge to English and other languages.

1712 First-Year Japanese
10 units MWF, 8:30-12:00 Y. Clark $510
This course is based on a new approach to learning Japanese which is fun, relaxed, playful and effective. This new method is a synthesis of many new and innovative teaching techniques developed in recent years to help accelerate students' foreign language learning. The two major components of this course are: (1) acquisition of basic communication skills of elementary Japanese and (2) learning hiragana and katakana syllabaries as well as some kanji characters. The language is taught multi-modally: lots of physical movement (Total Physical Response), use of pictures and graphics, diad-conversation practices, story telling and some story creating. Scenes of modern Japanese life will be presented in video images. This course is equivalent to one year of high school Japanese.

1713 Advanced Japanese
10 units MWF, 1:00-4:30 Y. Clark $510
Using a multi-modal approach, we will begin where we left off in First-Year Japanese. The course will include a comprehensive review of katakana and kanji we have already learned, and the introduction of much more kanji. Emphasis will be placed on consolidation of listening and speaking skills, and the additional grammar and constructions will advance studentsÕ understanding even further. In addition to our focus on learning the language, we will learn about culture and customs in contemporary Japanese life. This course covers the full content of second-year high school Japanese. We will use the text Yookoso (An Invitation to Japanese) and start from the second half of the book.

1715 First-Year Russian
10 units MWF, 1:00-4:30 A. Gabelko $510
This course will introduce students to the study of Russian language and culture, with a special emphasis on speaking and understanding Russian. The course will include grammar, composition, reading, and practical vocabulary-building. Students will be expected to master the Cyrillic alphabet. The course will cover the equivalent of one year of high school Russian.

1717 First-Year German
10 units MWF, 1:00-4:30 Staff $510
First-Year German is an introductory course, equivalent to a full year of high school German. The course introduces the written and spoken language, its grammar and structure, as well as German culture and history. After Third-Year German, students will be ready to prepare for the A.P. Exam.

1719 French Culture Through Literature
5 units M/Th, 1:00-4:30 Z. Rogow $350
This class will be conducted entirely in French. This course is a demanding but fun survey of French writing from the illuminated manuscripts of the Middle Ages to the experimental collage poems of the Surrealists in the 20th century. The class also makes use of the cultural riches of the Berkeley campus and the Bay Area, with field trips to a rare book library, a play, a cafˇ, and an art museum. Class activities will include intensive discussions, oral reports by students, acting-out plays and scenes from novels, talks by surprise visitors, and chances to try out some of the literary genres discussed. Students will acquire skills useful in interpreting literature in French or other languages.
Prerequisite: Three years of French language required, a fourth year strongly recommended.
