  • Tom's essay on the course weblog
    Who are you?

Such a simple question... in fact, you probably hear it many times day. Usually, you supply the simplest answer: your name. But there's so much more hidden beneath the surface of those three words. It turns out to be one of the those huge, multi-sided questions, the answer too big to see all at once. So we'll take a look at it, piece by piece. First, one's name. Then, one's identity. From there, how others perceive you. And then... just how the Internet changes it all.

  • Journal question:

    Who are you?
(Your name alone is NOT acceptable; tell a little bit more about who you are, with the understanding that this information is confidential and not to be 'cybercast' widely.)

Who are you when you are on-line? Are you still really seeing "yourself"? What parts make up the "you" in the cyberworld? How and why are real-you and cyber-you different? Do you think the difference, if any, is intentional (you definitely thought about, and made up, your online identity) or circumstantial (it's just that way, without planning or forethought on your part)?

  • homework for Mon. 7.17

Read Chapter 12, Multimedia. Create a simple page (or use one you've already made) and embed or add a background sound in it. Also, find a small movie anywhere on the web, and add it to your page... emphasis on small.*

*(Large movies on a page will cause the ATDP server to crawl to a halt, if lots of people start accessing that page all at once! And finally, do NOT place MP3 files on your directory on the server... welcoming as ATDP is, we do not want everyone in the world to come visiting our site all at once, downloading popular or even not-so-popular MP3s.)
