CALMEKAC, which means House of Higher Learning, is a group of students, who are from the Huron-Coalinga area*. These students, including myself, have all worked hard during school and have earned the chance to come to the University at Berkeley, California. Réy Leon and Fabiolla Tafolla, two former students at Berkeley, came up with the idea of sending students to the UC for summer studies and a new experience. Last year, was the beginning of CALMEKAC and it was successful. Our predecessors stayed in Casa Joaquin Murrietta about four blocks from campus. They went home to become motivations and inspirations to many other students. This year, two former students are back and two new students, Lorena Caldera and myself, were initiated. We hope to have a successful year, just as the previous.
